New Sigur Rós nearly completed

New Sigur Rós album near completion
Sigur Rós have been at work in their Sundlaugin studio in álafoss the past few weeks recording a full length album, which is now nearing completion. Orri told Morgunblaðið Newspaper today that the recordings have been going very well and that the album is taking form as a slower and more ambient record than Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust & Takk…. He also describes the music as melodic but much less noisy and more “out there” than previous albums. The album does not have a release date set but is expected to be released sometime next year.

The Foreign Monkeys Biography
The Foreign Monkeys was originally founded in December 2005. The line-up back then was very different from what it has become today. Soon, the band was reincarnated and a new line-up competed the Icelandic battle of the bands in the month of March the following year, and won. This gave The Foreign Monkeys a nation wide recognition. By this time TFM had taken on the closest to their current form. The bands powerful live performance created an immediate buzz, and their reputation spread fast, landing them larger crowds of rock thirsty audience. At the beginning of May 2006, only 2 months after winning BOTB competition, TFM performed in one of the largest venues in Iceland in front of 5.000 people. This performance was the opening act for highly acclaimed English artists, Badly Drawn Boy, Elbow and Echo and The Bunnymen. In August 2006, TFM would play their largest gig to this date, in front of 15.000 people in their hometown, at a festival with local artists. In 2006 TFM also started working on their first recording which is yet to see the light of day. In 2007, after a times of brewing frustration within the band, the singer left, leaving the project hanging by a thread. With the first album well in the making and a huge buzz created, the band was not sure if they would carry on. A few months later, the band decided that the album would be finished, and hired a rhythm guitarist, while the bass player and lead guitarist would fill the void the singer left within the band. Soon the vocal parts were recorded and the album finished, and finally it looks like the album will be released in 2009. The new line-up is finally ready to perform again and is bound to make an impact on the Icelandic scene.

Interview with Producer Peter Katis @ The Calcutta blog

Here's a part of an interview with indie-rock producer Peter Katis.
Conclusion
: Jónsi is very busy: solo album (with the help of Nico Muhly of Bedroom Community) & album with his partner as Riceboy sleeps

Peter: One thing that is kind of cool… I think one of the best bands in the last ten years is Sigur Rós. And in a few weeks, I start a record with Jónsi Birgisson from Sigur Rós. It’s sort of his solo record.
Colin: Is it with his partner or? There was a rumor that he and his boyfriend were doing something together?
Peter: Yes, but it’s not the “Riceboy(Sleeps)” thing. That’s a strictly ambient record that they made by themselves and comes out pretty soon.
Mike: Right
Colin: That’s pretty cool.
Peter: But the other collaborator on the record is Nico Muhly. Do you know who he is?
Michael: No.
Peter: He’s this sort of wunderkind, composer, arranger, conductor guy. He’s more from the world of contemporary classical, but sometimes, he’ll slum it with us indie rockers. So it’s going to be a largely acoustic guitar record but also with a lot of “out there” string arrangements. Strings, woodwinds, brass and double bass, actually.
Colin: Yeah we’re speaking with Sigur Rós’ string band Amiina.
Peter: Oh, right, right, right.
Colin: So that should be pretty cool. We really like their stuff.
Peter: I’ve never heard them and in fact when I saw Sigur Rós in the Fall and went to talk to Jónsi and stuff, it was their first time in seven years where they were touring without the strings. So I saw them as a four-piece rock band. I was pretty impressed how they still pulled off that big sonic landscape, not-bullshit-rock sound with four guys playing guitar, bass and drums.
Mike: The drummer beats on that kit. You know, live, at least when I saw them, he was so impressive to watch.
Peter: You know that’s where I give the sound guy credit at that show. It was at this really cool venue in New York, called The United Palace which is on W 176 St., way, way up town. And it was this beautiful old theatre. It’s like a smaller version of Radio City Music Hall. It sounded great but I think that’s because they didn’t put too much of the drum kit in the mix at all ‘cause it would have just been a mess. If you mixed it big rock-drums style, it would have been a wall of noise. Smart mixing…
Colin: That’s awesome.

Icelandic studio Sýrland goes Danish - Free Outdoor Concert 24. May 2009 with Dísa, Ólafur Arnalds & For a Minor Reflection

Famous Icelandic studio invades Denmark
Sýrland Studio, one of the most notable commercial studios in Iceland, is to expand into Denmark. The studio, which opened in 1988 and recorded The Sugarcubes' "Here today, Tomorrow, Next Week" as their first album, has played host to a range of internationally renowned artists both foreign and local, including Björk, Gus Gus, Morten Harket, Blur and Damon Albarn. Now, after a succesful twenty years in Iceland, the studio owners will launch a new studio in Hundslund, between Arhus and Horsens.
The studio is built in a renovated 18th century ranch and is being described as a “Residential Studio” since as well as a studio the venue also houses a a two-bedroom apartment and a seven-bedroom guesthouse and the three entities can be rented separately or as a whole. The Studio itself has a large live room, a control room and two Isolation booths. The sound in the live room is very alive and rich in reverberations and can be described as cathedral sounding. This makes the studio perfect for recording acoustic instruments, for classical music and Jazz.
The studio will open 24. May @ 16:00 with an outdoor concert featuring both Danish and Icelandic artists. Icelandic artists Dísa (Bryndís Jakobsdóttir), Ólafur Arnalds and For a Minor Reflection will play along with the Danish Mimas shortly after the opening ceremony.
The concert is free for all and is located in the Studio’s garden, Svinballevej 13, 8350 Hundslund. Bus 306 stops in the neighborhood (Horsens – Odder, bus 103 Århus – Odder).

Interview with Emiliana Torrini by Fanpage Emiliana.nu

Emiliana Torrini Interview on 14. May 2009

After more nine months since the release of her last album "Me And Armini", we have made a little point with Emiliana on her tour, her thoughts on this album, and others things. Have a good reading!

Hello Emiliana, thanks for taking some time for our questions, and first of all, how are you?

I am happy thank you.

Let's talk about "Me and Armini" for a minute. It's been 9 months since the album has been released. Do you think it's your most important work yet, the one you worked on the most, the one that is the most "like you"?

No every record represents a time and place for me so it is not about being more important then the next. All of them are me just me at the time when i did them. I have changed in someways i hope but i have taken most of me with me. I am definitely learning more with each record, which is the most important thing to me as i still find making a record fascinating and mind boggeling. It makes me smile circles around my head and yet infuriates me like nothing else. The record that was the hardest in the making for me personally was "fisherman´s woman". It took a lot out of me. It was a looong difficult period. This record is more care free i guess, in the making of it i mean. Dan and i know now fully how each other opperates so things were easier. We were and are two friends hanging out for five days at a time somewhere where we choose to be this time oxford and Iceland and just wrote music 20 hours a day and cooked meals. I took the decision of just letting go, letting everything come out that wanted to. Before i would have been in the rink in my head.

You wrote this album pretty fast, is this always the case when you begin a new project - is everything very clear in your head - or do you sometimes need more time and thoughts?

I personally need to be in the right head space. The best is when i haven't been writing for a long time. When i feel like a balloon about to burst. Then i meet dan. We don't plan or know what we are going to do ever. We go in, hit record and pop goes the balloon hopefully and not my head.

What is your favorite song on your album (maybe you don't have any favorite song!)?

Yes i do actually. Me me me... I have a few (haha). My favorites are "Beggars Prayer" and "Gun". It changes when i perform. To be honest i haven't listened to the record for months now. It felt really slow when i heard it last compared to the live shows now. Felt like slow motion.

Fans have been wandering a lot about the singles's release process, why did you decide about a digital release only, and no CD singles?

It was a question of time. We were in a hurry. Either we would put it out that year or the year after. Ididn't want to live with it for 6 months and then put it out, work it and start playing. I would have been over it by then and wanting to do something else. So we decided to put it out as soon as and with that i couldn't spend hardly any time on artwork. I was just lucky billy und hells could do the cover picture so quick.

You've been touring since October, it's also your longest tour in your whole carreer, how does you feel about this?

Is it? It hasn't felt like that at all. I am really enjoying it. I thought i wouldn't, was dreading it. I have until january next year to see if i can do this kind of touring or if i will be rocking naked in the corner with my hair cut off and nails broken from scratching the bus walls. Singing kumbaya in tibetan throat singing style...

And we are curious, what do you listen to, what are the recent CDs you bought and enjoyed?

I am really enjoying dark horses (liza lindley-jones). She is unsigned as of yet and i lover her record. She was kind enough to give it to me when we met. We shared a rental car to get to a mutual friends wedding in the north. Also this girl on myspace called Kimberly Linn.
The music we listen to before going on stage is Blind Blake, a Caribbean calypso artist (trinidad). My drummer brought it and we are all hooked. My favorite song on there at the moment is "its love love alone causing edward to leave his throne".

We are even more curious, what was the latest movie you saw in the cinema (if you still have time to go!)?

I saw the "State of Play". It was ok. There are usually two guys that can be suspected to be the bad guy, the famous actor or the very famous actor, excluding the main actor of course... It usually is the very famous actor (haha).
I watch dvds a lot and saw an older film, a german one called "The life of others". That was an amazing film. That made me happy. Also "Owning Mahowny" i have seen that twice now it is the sort of -don´t do it!, nooo don´t do it!- movie. My next movie will be wolverine... I love movies like that, can't help myself.

Thanks a lot for your time, we wish you a great time on the tour road!

Thank you very much as well. Hope the summer gives you a bags of treats.

The Pollocks in Iceland
It´s 1981 a lot of young peoples minds are filled with fear of the apocolyps caused by of the cold war. Two half american brothers, members of the Pollock clan originated in scotland (later moved to America) blending with black feet souix indians setting roots in good old Kentucky and the other half Icelandic.
These brothers go to Iceland at a young age and shake the Icelandic music industry harder then any 8 richter earthquake could with a punk band called Utangarðsmenn or the outsiders in english. Voted the rockband of the century in Iceland 2001.
These brothers both hook up with Icelandic women and in the end of 1981 a baby girl was born in down town of Reykjavík Tanya Lind Danielsdóttir Pollock. 4 months later a baby boy was born in down town of Reykjavík Marlon Lee 'Ulfur Pollock. These kids grew up 2 block away from each other, there lives filled with alot of beautifull music chaos and gray people and places, hungry ghosts, elves, mystic nights and dancing northren lights and ongoing sunshine threw out the night in summer time. Raised like brother and sister.
Now 22 years later they have played in London, North America, Norway and of course Iceland and the lates is the warm up the did for 50 cent in Laugardalshöll were Marlon was rapping and Anonymous took care of the production.
There music is inspired by Native American shaminisem, Icelandic nature, there dreams and of course daily life, good days and bad.
The Music can´t be put in one category it all depends on the nature of the feeling each time we sit down and create all from classical piano to old school hardcore, drum & bass, hip-hop, ambient, electro, punk, rock´n roll tribal chanting you name it we got it floating inside of us.

gímaldin Made "Vodka Songs" with rock singer Valur Gunnarsson in 2008. An Album distributed by Kimi Records Label.
Iceland´s top political rock poet joins hands with Iceland´s most underground composer, resulting in this groundbreaking musical duo.
In the bleak late winter months of 2006, poet Valur Gunnarsson had been researching material around the Baltic Sea for a novel . His travels in Finland brought him finally to St. Petersburg where he met up with the Icelandic composer gímaldin in a dirty, ragged bar called Tzinnik. The late night welcoming party culminated in the poet bringing forth lyrics which had come to him during his quest. Being occupied with his novel, the poet left it to the composer to create the platform for the execution of the lyrics. The music, composed under the freezing Russian cold was then transported to merry, sunny Iceland for further studio work. The artistic climate was ripe with creativity, luring some of Iceland´s finest instrumentalists into the blend.
The release however, was put back, as the poet had revert to his author personality to materialize his novel - and the composer was summoned back to his dealings in Russia.
Finally, a stroke of kismet brought the parties involved in close enough proximity to one another - in the end of summer 2008, to ascend the music to the next level of existance. With an accommodating distribution deal with independent label Kimi Records, the album was set to go.

"Drugs" by Cynic Guru is 112. Song of the Week

    112. Song of the Week is Cynic Guru's old song "Drugs", the first Single of the Album "Iceland".
The band members of Cynic Guru are:
Roland Hartwell (vocals, violin, guitar), also a member of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra
    Ricky Korn (bass)
    Oli Holm (drums)
    Einar Johannsson (lead guitar, vocals)
History of the band (Source: Wikipedia)
Cynic Guru is a progressive rock band fronted by classically trained violinist Roland Hartwell.
Cynic Guru started in 1991 in Los Angeles as 3-piece known as Where Is My Hair. This featured Roland Hartwell (guitar, vocals), Stefan Örn (bass), and Steef Van Oosterhout (drums). In 1993, another phase of the band, SkotLaPop, was born. This incarnation of the band had Roland Hartwell (guitar, vocals, violin) and new members Marc Thomas (lead guitar), Chris Sampson (vocals, guitars), and Matt Matson (drums). In 1996, the SkotLaPop became "Cynic Guru". Chris Sampson left the band and was replaced by Mike Constantini (guitars, vocals) and Vince Varquez (bass).
Hartwell, a classically trained violin player, got offered a job touring with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra on the East Coast of the US in the late 1990s. They liked him so much, that they eventually offered him a full-time position within the group. After enough commuting back and forth from Iceland, Hartwell decided to accept the offer, leaving Cynic Guru with him.
It wasn't until long that Roland Hartwell decided re-form Cynic Guru in Reykjavik, Iceland. He did this adding members Ricky Korn (bass), Einar Jóhannsson (lead guitar and backing vocs), Óli Hólm (drums), and John Mono (backing vocals and keyboards).
About 3-4 years later, Cynic Guru was signed to Sena, the largest record label/entertainment group in Iceland. This paved the way for "Iceland"- Cynic Guru's debut album. Although many of the songs on Iceland had already been included in past EPs, most were either re-arranged or simply re-recorded. After nearly a year in production, "Iceland", was released on September 26, 2005. The first single from "Iceland", "Drugs", made it to the number one spot on X-FM 97.7 in Reykjavík, beating out Queens of the Stone Age, Papa Roach, Green Day, Audioslave, The Transplants, Used/My Chemical Romance, and Nine Inch Nails.
2005 started off with a bit of a jolt. Cynic Guru was picked up by a British label, Fat Northerner Records, and a Japanese label, Westwood Records, for distribution. Sadly, however, John Mono decided to part ways with the band.
Cynic Guru had their first UK tour in June 2006. "Drugs" was re-released as a single on iTunes and on 7" vinyl in the UK, with the b-side "Dick".

    Warm welcome in Reykjavik

Iceland’s entry to the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest, “Is It True?” by Óskar Páll Sveinsson, performed by Jóhanna Gudrún Jónsdóttir, placed second in Moscow on Saturday, and the Eurovision team was given a hero’s welcome upon their arrival to Reykjavík yesterday.
Thousands of people gathered at Austurvöllur parliamentary square and cheered Jónsdóttir on while she performed “Is It True?” one more time. The performance was broadcast live on national broadcaster RÚV.
“I think it is very important for Iceland to receive favorable coverage and good news, something positive,” Jónsdóttir said. The weather was sunny and warm, almost 20°C (68°F), and Morgunbladid described the atmosphere as at a “national festival.”
“All of us in the group are still trying to realize what has happened. It is very strange and we have to get used to the notion that we made such an achievement,” Jónsdóttir told Fréttabladid.
Iceland had not been expected to get this far—the betting house Oddschenker, for example, predicted that “Is It True?” would end up in seventh place.
The song will be included on a summer hits record that will be released in Sweden shortly, and some foreign record labels have expressed interest in signing Jónsdóttir.
Norway won a decisive victory in Moscow on Saturday and Azerbaijan placed third.
