Aldrei for ég sudur Festival 2007 @ Isafjordur (West Fjords Iceland)

Mugison is one of Iceland’s best known artists. A temporary cosmopolitan when studying sound engineering in London he plugged in the Humphrey Hancock set up at Accidental Records and had a critically acclaimed album, Mugimama is the Monkey Music, world wide. Becoming a globe trotter for 2 years following up on the release Mugison decided to go back to his roots in the West fjords of Iceland. Running his record label, Mugiboogie, from the remote fishing village Isafjordur he has also invented a new and exciting festival with his dad Muggur (hence the artist name Mugison).

Their vision began back in 2005 and simply as the story is told on the welcoming website page by Mugison himself:
‘Me and papamug were drinking beer in London last summer while we were enjoying a music festival at the ICA. We started to imagine a festival in our little town located on the westest part of Iceland. We imagined that we would do a festival were local workers would sing, dj and entertain as they were the main attraction and we would get the biggest name in Icelandic music seen to support them. When we woke up the idea was still there so we called up some friends and to our surprise everybody was up for it. A guy called Ragnar (the singer in Trabant) loved the idea, he got everybody involved, we even talked to Bjork when we meet her down town when we were drunk.. she said we were cutie pies and for a long time we thought that was yes….’

And fun they have had. The locals regard this as one of the highlights in their culture diary as their fellow country people are slowly discovering this hidden nature treasure and the unique character of its inhabitants. And the festival is already luring people from as far apart as New York and Paris and everywhere in between.

Iceland Airwaves Festival 2007 - First acts announced

As previously announced, the ninth annual Iceland Airwaves festival will take place in various venues all over downtown Reykjavík during the week of October 17-21 this year. The five-day festival has been steadily growing since its inception and is now widely considered to be among the highlights of the annual music-festival calendar. As per usual, this year’s bash looks to surpass the previous ones in terms of sheer intensity, with an approximated 170 acts competing for the festivalgoers’ attention.

Among the acts thus far confirmed to play this year are rising international stars Bloc Party (UK), who have seen some very favourable reviews for their latest release, ‘A Weekend in the City’, and are currently amidst a reportedly never-ending world tour (so you know they’ll be super-tight come October). Another reason to get excited is the impending appearance of Elephant Six Collective legends of Montreal (US), whose ‘Hissing Fauna, are you the Destroyer’ is already being touted as a steady contender for 2007’s year-end lists.

The awesome !!! (chk, chk, chk) will make the trans-Atlantic trip from their New York hideouts to shake some Scandinavian booty, as will delightfully weird Canadian rapper Buck 65 [pictured]. Moshi Moshi Records' Best Fwend (US) are also confirmed and to make up for last year’s regrettable cancellation, Sweden’s Jenny Wilson will try and make it over once more.

Local acts scheduled to perform at Iceland Airwaves 2007 include festival favourites GusGus, who never fail to whip the crowd to a frenzy with they jagged rhythms and intense stage presence. Their latest effort, ‘Forever’, has been making waves across the world’s dance floors lately, and a hefty tour schedule for the summer will likely ensure a top performance from Iceland’s favourite electronic act.

We are also delighted to announce that Iceland’s other favourite electronic act, múm, will play their first ever Airwaves live-set this fall (the band has thus far limited its Airwaves appearances to DJ-sets). Last year’s surprise hit, Ritalin-infused techno-mongrels Ultra Mega Technóbandið Stefán have also confirmed their appearance, as has Ipecac recording artist Mugison (who is now working on a soundtrack for the Walter Salles directed ‘On the Road).

Reykjavík’s proximity to a plethora of geysers, waterfalls and other natural phenomena that are unlike anything found elsewhere in the world helps earn the festival some of its merit, although it’s main attraction has always been the music. Making a point of always showcasing a healthy mixture of local and international talent, the festival often features bands on the brink of it-dom well before they gain international notoriety (cases in point: The Rapture, TV on the Radio, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah). Iceland Airwaves’ location – in the numerous and infamous bars and clubs of 101 – adds a final touch of charm to the world’s northernmost music festival.

Icelandic computer animated short film Anna and the Moods premiered in Iceland on February 9 and has been well received. Now, Caoz, the company behind the film, is looking into producing shows about Anna for foreign TV stations.
“Our goal is to sell shows about Anna to Scandinavia and other European countries, even to the US. But first we have to adapt the material for foreign markets,” Arnar Gunnarsson, an animator at Caoz, told www.icelandreview.com
"People find it interesting how strange the characters look,” Gunnarsson said and added that the director of Anna and the Moods and one of Caoz’ founders, Gunnar Karlsson, was the one who created this unusual look; spindly bodies and big heads.
Anna and the Moods was nominated for three awards at the 2006 Edda Awards, the Icelandic Oscars, and won the award for Best Short Film.
The plot is described thus: “One day Anna the perfect child wakes up looking like a sad version of Marilyn Manson and is terribly moody. When her parents take her to ‘Dr. Artmann’s Clinic for the Unruly Child,’ she is tested in the mad doctor’s labyrinth. The result is shocking: ANNA IS A TEENAGER!”
Björk lends Anna her voice and Blur singer Damon Albarn portrays her father. The script was created by Icelandic lyricist Sjón and the music features the Brodsky Quartet.

Since Caoz was founded in 2000 it has undertaken various animation projects, mostly TV commercials, but also one other movie. The animated short film The Lost Little Caterpillar won two awards at the 2002 Edda Awards, for Best Short Film and Best Look.
