Sigur Rós Competition
gob·ble·de·gook [gob-uh-l-dee-gook] -- noun
language characterized by circumlocution and jargon, usually hard to understand: the gobbledegook of government reports.
Also, gob·ble·dy·gook.
Synonyms gibberish, doubletalk, bosh, mumbo jumbo.
Even though the band originally called it 'Gobbidí-gobb' in onomatopoeic reference to the way the beat was reminiscent of a horse's hooves on cobblestones (Gobbidí-gobb is Icelandic for what in English we call "clippety clop"), through mis-translation the song quickly became known as "Gobbledigook". This too seemed pleasing since to most non-Icelandic listeners Sigur Rós lyrics are "gibberish", and, if they are sung in 'Hopelandic', then they are literally "mumbo jumbo".
Then we heard the Hebrew version of "Svefn-G-Englar" http://dot.sigurros.com/media/svenfn-g-englar-hebrew.mp3 and an idea began to germinate. Suppose we ask people from all around the world to do their own re-interpretations of a tune? And what better than "Gobbledigook", the gibberish anthem itself?
So here we are: we're giving you the backing track stripped of lead vocal, and the lyrics in both (broken) English and Icelandic. Feel free to use or discard both or either, as you see fit. All we ask is that you supply your own rendition of this free-spirited branch of Sigur Rós' development. No holds barred. The only thing to fear is fear itself, etc, etc
Note: You can submit an audio-only entry (e.g. a re-recording of the song), but you will have to set that audio to a video (even a blank screen) and upload it to YouTube and add to this Group.
PRIZE: There will be a signed copy of the Special Edition of "Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust" to the most gratifying entry - that's not necessarily the best, just the one the band like the most. Ok, do your worst....
INSTRUCTIONS: Deadline is October 15, but see DISCUSSIONS below for full instructions.
INSTRUMENTAL MP3 @ http://dot.sigurros.com/media/gobbledigook-instr.mp3
Lyrics in (broken) English:
You hats make fly into the air
You turn umbrellas inside out too often
oh no, don't
You roofs blow out into the stormy sea
You hair stroke and hem blowing
Prankster boy
Wind in hair
Your eyes blow sand, tears
You gum throw in hair stuck
Prankster boy
Wind in hair
Lyrics in Icelandic:
ÓHRÆSISSTRÁKUR - Gobbledigook
Þú hatta fjúka lætur í loft
þú regnhlíf snú á hvolf allt of oft
ó nei, ekki,
Þú þök að fjúka út á brot sjó
þú hári strjúka faldinum sló
Óhræsisstrákur
Vindur í hárinu
Þú augu fjúka í sand tárast
Þú tyggigúm í hendir hár fast
Óhræsisstrákur
Vindur í hárinu"
