Pop band Hjaltalín hosts its grandest concert event to date at the Reykjavík Arts Festival. It will be accompanied at the Icelandic Opera by a chamber orchestra conducted by Daníel Bjarnason, one of Iceland's youngest and most promising conductor and composer. In total, some 20 musicians will performing Hjaltalín's music.
Hjaltalín's is taking a break from its buy European tour to play its first concert date in Iceland this year. The band members are in the process of writing new material for their next CD, due to be released in the autumn. The concert play list will include a number of songs performed for the first time, together with material from previous releases.
The chamber orchestra, put together for the event, includes outstanding Icelandic musicians, including Melkorka Ólafsdóttir (flute), Matthías Nardeau (oboe), Hrafnkell Orri Egilsson (cello), Una Sveinbjarnardóttir (violin) and Borgar Þór Magnason (double bass). Hjaltalín and their fellow musicians promise the audience a memorable event.
Hjaltalín was formed in 2004. Its members are Axel Haraldsson, Guðmundur Óskar Guðmundsson, Hjörtur Ingvi Jóhannsson, Högni Egilsson, Rebekka Björnsdóttir, Sigríður Thorlacíus and Viktor Orri Árnason.
In January, Hjaltalín got an excellent review in the Financial Times for its London concert. The critic drew parallels between Hjaltalín and Sigur Rós, The Salvation Army and Electric Light Orchestra. Leading French newspaper Libération mentioned the band on its website recently, in a column listing the five songs currently being widely played. Hjaltalín's Goodbye July got the top listing.
