Running in the family - An update about Icelandic musical families
Sigrún Hjálmtýsdóttir was born on 8. August 1955, the second of 7 children. Now she's better known as Diddú, the soprano & songwriter. Her father was bank clerk Hjálmtýr E. Hjálmtýsson & her mother was writer Margrét Matthíasdóttir. She began her career as a vocalist in folk band Spilverk Þjóðanna (1975-1978). She turned to classic music later on, when she returned from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London (1979-1984). In 1994, Diddú appeared as mother in Friðrik Þór Friðriksson's movie Bíódagar (Movie Days).

Diddú's youngest brother, Páll Óskar Hjálmtýsson, born on the 16. March 1970, is Iceland's Nr. 1 gay pop star, songwriter & DJ Paul Oscar.
