Cucamonga - Interview with SIGUR RÓS Album ( ) Belgian Radio Show

SIGUR RÓS
( )
Fatcat/PIAS/fatcd 22

JON THOR BIRGISSON: The most natural way of singing is to create the sounds that you feel, that come to you, sounds that are really kind of natural. You don't have to put some text into it later. That's not the way. It's what comes into your mind spontaneously. So it is the purest form of vocal sound.

JON THOR BIRGISSON: Icelandic language is somewhat harsh for singing. But it is nice; it's nice to sing in it. The last album was in Icelandic, but this is maybe like a one step further in clearness. There are a lot of bands in Iceland that sing in English because it floats much better. That's a little bit understandable. It's a more easy way to fit the words for a song in English, because Icelandic is somewhat harder to do, it's a little bit harsher.

JON THOR BIRGISSON: Our booklet inside the CD is just empty pages. People have to listen to the record and write their own lyrics, their own feelings, or draw a picture or something. It's up to them, the CD is not finished. They have to finish it themselves and kind of fill the space between the brackets. I think it's quite nice that I'm not trying to tell them some story of my life. I think you have to relate it to your life, to your surroundings and your environment.

JON THOR BIRGISSON: Our last CD "Agaetis byrjun" was sung in Icelandic. People didn't understand the lyrics, but they had their own interpretation of the lyrics. They didn't know what I was singing about. It was just their story, their understanding. It's quite nice when people have some soundtrack to their life.

JON THOR BIRGISSON: We have this mentality of doing it all yourself. It's quite funny, because in Denmark for example the government helps everybody. If they're doing a record they get sponsored, get some money for doing the record and the rehearsal space is also really cheap. And there are a lot of places to play in Denmark, kind of sponsored by the government. They have really nice equipments, nice PA's. But there's nothing like this in Iceland. The Icelandic government just don't know there exists good music in Iceland. It's really weird actually and so far behind. For that reason people have to do everything by themselves. But it's nice too, because you learn so much on your own.

JON THOR BIRGISSON: For our first album we did everything ourselves. We recorded the album and did the cover ourselves and walked around town hanging out posters on buildings and things like that. I think it's really good for you to do everything yourself, in the beginning at least. It's nice to know the roots and to know how things work. And actually for this album we went around town and sprayed on houses. We did kind of a stencil, a really small picture of a boy who is kind of sleepwalking. We did some kind of stencil and cut it out and sprayed it around the city hall and things like that.

JON THOR BIRGISSON: Wherever you are born, you are related to the place. If you were born and raised in Brussels maybe you would write different music than if you were born and raised up in Iceland. Every place has its identities. The nation, the people who live there have their special mentality. I think it's more an unconscious thing. We don't write songs next to geysers or up in the mountains, but it probably is related to the surroundings and nature. Iceland is a spacious country; there are not so much tall buildings as here in Brussels. You can see the sky and the whole horizon, so it's maybe a little bit more open.

JON THOR BIRGISSON: We make just music that makes us feel really good, us four. And when we have written a song, we feel really good. We all have this urge to create something, because it's so healthy for you and it gives you so much. After you have written some songs you feel so much nourish for your soul. It's so good, you feel so alive. Maybe it's good to listen to it, maybe you feel what we feel when we are just alone in our space and feel good.
