Icelandic bands múm, Ruxpin & GusGus in "In Search of Sound" Documentary

Icelandic bands múm, Ruxpin and Gus Gus will be featured in an upcoming documentary series, In Search of Sound, according to Newspaper visir. Over fifty solo artists and bands will appear, among them Mouse on Mars, Felix the Dog, Coldcut and Mogwai.
The documentary covers alternative music in 27 cities and countries, including Iceland. It is filmed by 22 different film makers and directed by Brian Parsons. Emphasis is put on an intimate backstage view of the artists and the record labels. Special screenings in Iceland have yet to be determined. Eysteinn Gudnason & Jónas Gudmundsson directed the Icelandic section.
I chose those particular Icelandic artists because I have loved their music for many years and I couldn’t understand why they weren’t getting the attention they deserve in the USA” Brian Parsons said. It has not been disclosed which songs from the bands are heard in the film but GusGus will appear in the second series. The múm interview was done at Reykjavik’s Pond, whereas Ruxpin was followed on their concert tour over Iceland and Estonia.
"I find everything that has to do with Iceland interesting, especially the fact that such great music can come from such a small place. I see that as a symbol of the rich culture and the values of the people of Iceland” said Parsons.

Interview with Jóhann Jóhannsson by DaMusic: Kind regards from a happy melancholic

JJ is popular in Belgium, so he's often playing on Belgian ground. He has a good view on the Icelandic music scene in particular.
Read an interview in Dutch/Flemish called "Met hartelijke groet van een gelukkige melancholicus" with Jóhann Jóhannsson by Karen here.
A small part translated by me:
DaMusic: Why is it that your music, and also the music by Sigur Rós & múm, is so popular by making rather isolated soundscapes?
JJ: Well, our individualism unites us: we are very different but we all do our stuff in a radical way. You can call me, Sigur Rós & múm typical Icelandic, just because we are so different. Iceland is like a playgarden for musicians & artists, inbetween the cultural & political influences of the USA & Europe. In one way we're isolated & individualistic, in another way we're a melting pot. A bit like Reykjavik itself: on the first sight a small town, but at the same time cosmopolitan & anonymous city.

Beck covered "All Tomorrow's Parties" with Icelandic singer Þórunn Antonía on vocals

Beck did a cover of The Velvet Underground & Nico's song "All Tomorrow's Parties" with the help of Icelandic singer Þórunn Antonía Magnusdóttir.
More about her:
She released an Album called ''Those Little things'' in 2002, with the help of her father Magnús Þór Sigmundsson (member of band Change). Moved to England & started the band The Honeymoon with Wayne Murray (new guitar player of Manic Street Preachers). The band got signed to BMG (Bertelsmann Music Group) and released the record ''Dialogue'' in 2004, produced by The Away Team, working with the Icelandic band Leaves @ that time.
"Truth hurts" by The Honeymoon
www.youtube.com/v/4EfhISFn6V0&hl&fmt=18

She was singer in the Danish band Junior Senior for a while. Later she joined the band Fields, who released an EP called ''4 From The Village'' in 2006 on Black Lab Records. Followed by debut album ''Everything Last Winter'' in 2007 released on Atlantic Records.
Further she collaborated on her father's solo records ''Hljóð er nóttin'' (2005) and ''Sea son'' in 2007.
Nowadays she's living in Los Angeles and been singing with The New no2. She's working on another solo record in Iceland (recording a demo for a pop album).
Read an interview in Icelandic in the latest Monitor issue # 17
She's talking about The Honeymoon making a videoclip @ Oxford: price 70.000£ (1.000.000 IKR) & close encounters with Britney Spears @ Nightclub @ LA ("Oh my God, my arms are SO fat").
There is one song of her on the "Trúbatrix: Taka 1" Album.

Hljómar Invent Icelandic Pop
Dr. Gunni in Grapevine Magazine (Issue # 10, July 2009)

During 1967 and ‘68, Hljómar were once again the major band in Iceland. After the band’s failure to break through (both internationally and locally) with their “difficult” experimental rhythm & blues (as Thor’s Hammer, later recognised as one of the best music made in Iceland during the sixties), the band set out to play more “comfortable” pop music. The plot worked out fine. The band quickly gained back their earlier popularity and Svavar Gests decided to finance a Hljómar album for his SG imprint. This eponymous Hljómar album was to become the first
Icelandic modern pop album.
The band had to be flown to London, as Iceland’s recording studios at that time ere deemed “not good enough.” Hljómar recorded twelve songs. Five songs were new originals, three by Gunnar
Þórðarson, one by Þórir Baldursson, and one by Dátar’s Rúnar Gunnarsson. The rest of the album featured cover versions of foreign hits with Icelandic lyrics, often by Þorsteinn Eggertsson (who also drew the album’s cover). During the trip to London, the band stocked up on the newest threads from hip shops on Carnaby Street. An Icelandic TV special was made with the band lip-synching to the songs dressed to the gills in hippie gear with flowerpots dangling from their guitars. Hljómar had obviously seen The Beatles’ performance of All you need is Love as their appearance looked similar, with young hip people sitting around, including members of Flowers and other bands, grooving convincingly to the music.
Hljómar played relentlessly at dance balls all around Iceland. The band rarely performed their own songs but mostly cover versions of recent international hits. These balls had little to do with love and peace. Rúnar Júlíusson, the beloved singer and bassist, had originally been prone to shyness, playing with his back to the audience. Now he had turned into a wild animal on stage. He jumped, climbed, dived, even stripped on stage. His stage act was legendary and hasn’t been
matched since. The guests didn’t come for any peace crap either. The drunk and horny crowd often tore down the places to the pounding backdrop of Hljómar’s music. A legendary ball in Sandgerði in 1968 ended in a riot after the band stopped playing at two o’clock instead of four as
promised. Chairs, windows, glasses and bottles were smashed, leaving the place in ruins.
Sheepskin vests for world domination Dreams of world domination were re-kindled when Hljómar tried to break into the Scandinavian market in 1968. In a joint effort with Guðlaugur Bergmann, who had run Reykjavík’s hippest fashion store, Karnabær, for two years, the band
went to Sweden as ambassadors of Icelandic pop and fashion. “The band tends to bring together the traditional Icelandic way and the world of pop,” wrote Morgunblaðið, adding: “Hljómar will all be dressed in sheepskin-vests. Knitted sock-shoes, caps, etc. will be brought along.
Hljómar have arranged ancient Icelandic rhyme motifs and added into their music and the langspil (ancient Icelandic instrument) will be taken along.”
The trip didn’t do much, neither for Icelandic fashion nor Hljómar. The band was offered a support slot for The Spencer Davis Group though, but the members didn’t think that was good enough.
For their second album (also eponymous, but later referred to as Hljómar II), the band added Shady Owens to the line-up. Shady was a 19-year-old daughter of an American soldier and Icelandic mother, and had stayed in Iceland for a while, singing with Óðmenn. She had a
wonderful voice and sang the Icelandic lyrics with a charming American accent.
The album was recorded in London in a record-breaking 35 hours (their first LP had taken 16 hours). Sixteen session musicians played on the album, including keyboardist Nick Hopkins, who had just played on “Revolution” for The Beatles. The album had six original songs by Gunnar Þórðarson on Side 1 and six cover versions on Side 2. Soon after the album’s release, Gunnar admitted regrets for including the cover songs. The album cost much more than SG had intended and sold less than the first album. A lawsuit ensued which ended in Hljómar having
to pay SG back for the extravaganza.
As the hair and beards grew longer and the general rock direction got heavier and more progressive, Hljómar’s pop direction started to date fast. Hljómar’s primary competition had been psychedelic pop band Flowers, and within that band, too, some wanted to move on to play a different kind of music. The band members – especially the two Gunnars (Þórðarson from Hljómar and Jökull Hákonarson, the drummer from Flowers) – discussed a liaison, often in privacy at discothèque Las Vegas on Grensásvegur. The conclusion was Trúbrot, Iceland’s first “super-group”. We’ll get to that next time.
Dr. Gunni, based on his book Eru ekki allir í stuði? (Rock in Iceland), published in 2000.
A revisited up-date of the book is forthcoming in 2010.

Jónsi Birgisson & Alex Somers Album "Riceboy Sleeps" is out now.

More information @ Jónsi & Alex

In the spotlight @ IMX:
Sleeping Giants
Known primarily for his haunting falsetto and other-worldly presence as the singer in Sigur Rós, Jón Þór (Jónsi) Birgisson has - together with his partner Alex Somers - been exhibiting artwork and staging exhibitions under the name Riceboy Sleeps for two or three years now.
A couple of months back the early fruits of the musical side of this collaboration surfaced in physical form for the first time, with the track "Happiness", on the exemplary ‘Dark Was The Night’ Red Hot compilation. Now the full-length "Riceboy Sleeps" album is finished and ready for release.
‘Riceboy Sleeps’ is a 68-minute ambient odyssey, that embraces the cerebral and the human in equal measure. Played solely on acoustic instruments in Iceland (and featuring long-time Sigur Rós string collaborators Amiina, as well as the Kópavogsdætur Choir) and then endlessly toyed with on solar-powered laptops in a raw food commune in some far corner of Hawaii, ‘Riceboy Sleeps’ has a suitably “organic feel” to it.
Alex - you’re known predominantly as a visual artist. How long have you been making music?
I’ve been making music for a long time, actually since before the visual stuff. I have been in bands since I was 15, mostly rock and roll bands, so making music and collaborating is not new for me. This is the first album I’ve released or published though…
When did you both get into “quieter” music?
Alex: When I was 18 or 19. I used to make music with my brother, which was always quieter. I immediately liked it. It felt somehow like it was my roots. If felt right to lose the pulse. Before Riceboy sleeps I’d been making stuff by myself at home, with good friends or again with my brother.
Jónsi: When I was young I used to put on ambient music. I used to listen to it intensely, it really did something for me. If I was feeling blue and sad it would actually soothe me. As you get older and more boring you tend to put it on and keep it in the background. The challenge for us was to make something quiet but still interesting. I was listening to [our album] recently and was surprised at how intense it is in places. It’s not like a pure ambient album. It’s not really all that relaxing sometimes.
Is this music is intimately tied up with your combined visual art aesthetic?
Alex: Definitely. They are one and the same for me. When Jónsi and I make photos or video projects, they come from exactly the same place as the songs. We’re always hoping to create the same kind of atmosphere.
When did the two of you first start making music?
Alex: We’ve been making music since we met in 2005, on and off. In fact we’ve been working on this project since then. We didn’t know we had an album until recently though. When we realized this, we took a month off and went to Hawaii to mix the album there.
And the whole album was recorded at your home in Reykjavik?
Alex: Yes, in our apartment we have all the instruments - harmonium, celeste, glockenspiels, piano, guitars…we wrote the whole thing on acoustic instruments.
Jonsi: It was really drawn out and involved time spent in our living room and kitchen. It was great.
How did the song-writing process work for this project?
Alex: Often the songs would grow from a sample or something, and just evolve. They very often became something else than they were intended to be. I personally like playing piano, guitar and harmonium. They are my three favourites. I also love the sampler, recording sounds and then playing with them and processing them.
Jónsi: We put in equal amounts. It was such a casual and lengthy project that no one can say what anyone else did. We had no deadline and no pressure. I would maybe fiddle around on a piano, then we’d leave it for half a year and then discover it and think “that sounds nice”. Some songs came quickly, some slowly. The last song, Sleeping Giant, took all five years and was one of the last songs that we finished.
Is the project influenced by any ‘ambient’ producers in particular, Eno for example?
Alex: Hm, nothing that I can think of. I personally think Eno is cool and I like his music. But really it was us doing our own thing. We never sit around listening to ambient music together or anything.
The album spans your entire relationship. Does it feel like some kind of personal archival document to you?
Alex: It is a bit like that. Most couples don’t get the opportunity to share their relationship in this way, and it sounds like the two of us at home to me for sure.
Jónsi: I think so too, but it needs more time to sink in. When you’ve just finished albums you want to get away from them. Only after some time can you think back to the special moments and atmospheres.
Some ambient albums are created electronically but this is way more acoustic
Alex: All the instruments were acoustic, and we added a string section and choir to help give it that feel. Sometimes with ambient bands it sounds too electronic. There’s mistakes here and it sounds rough in places. I mean we’re not the best engineers.
Jónsi - what crossovers were there between this project and your work with Sigur Rós?
There are always going to be parallels with music projects. It was a little bit like Sigur Rós sometimes in the working method and the way we slowed things down, reversed things and tweaked them. And of course we worked with amiina, the string quartet that play with Sigur Rós. You can’t help but have it be similar in some ways.
You went to the jungle in Hawaii to mix it all down. Why there?
Alex: We just wanted to go somewhere warm and to have some real undisturbed focus. We just took our laptops and speakers. Jónsi found out about a raw food community, like 12-15 people living together living off the land and using only solar power. So we had this small hut in the middle of the jungle and had dinners with these people from all over world and for all ages. It was a great way to finish an album. Sometimes we had the music up loud and it was quite amusing one evening to find this hippy lady called Humming Bird meditating outside our hut and making these spiritual comments…
Will you be doing anything live?
Jónsi: Maybe next year we will. It depends on the schedule. We’d want to do it with maybe a small string section or a choir, and of course some visual elements. We haven’t gotten that far yet though….

Interview with Ólöf Arnalds by Free Williamsburg

I found a review of a show as well as a short Free Williamsburg interview with Ólöf Arnalds, with even a reference to Finnish music scene:

Last night, I was fortunate to check out the Ólöf Arnalds show at the Scandinavia house. I say fortunate because I had never had a chance to see the Icelandic songstress live and it was by far one of my favorite shows this year. The setting was intimate, and she used it to her advantage--engaging the audience many times by having us join in the chorus. She is definitely one to check out if you have a chance. While Arnalds has played four times this week, I am sure she will be coming back soon. Before the show, I was able to have Arnalds answer a few questions--from her place in music history as an Icelandic singer to her role as a musician during a tough economic climate.
FW: Can you give us a little background on your history as a musician? How long have you been solo?
OA: I had musical upbringing from 6 years old, learning violin, changing to singing lessons at 16, I quit music school at 21 and moved to Berlin, where I stayed for one winter and hung out with the Mum kids a lot, shortly after I moved home I started my studies in composition and new media at the Icelandic Academy of the Arts, taking a one year break from my studies to tour with Mum. I graduated from the school in 2006 and while working with Skuli Sverrisson on his record "Seria" from 2006 I started making my own music and lyrics for my first album that came out in 2007.
FW: Do you think there is more freedom in the approach to the music when you are a solo artists? Which do you prefer more--the band environment or being a solo artist?
OA: I like doing both. What I like about playing solo is that you stand and fall entirely alone with your performance. But the musicians I collaborate with always teach me a lot and it's also nice to be able to share the experience of touring and playing.
FW: The music you play is light and airy like Vashti Bunyan as much as it also references contemporaries like Lau Nau and Kria Brekkan. What are your influences? Who do you feel are your musical colleagues?
OA: I find it impossible to pinpoint my strongest influence, I work from impulse, not from predecided ideas about sound of feel, so any influence I'm under is very indirect in my mind.
FW: The Nordic region has been churning out great music over the last few decades. Do you think their are regional similarities in different parts? What do you feel the vibe is in Iceland compared to other countries? Do you feel at all akin to the Finnish Freak Folk scene?
OA: Well, Icelanders and Finns have some special connection, especially in regards of their drinking habits! The good thing about the Icelandic scene is that it's very fluent in a way, things happen quickly and easily, everything is very spontanious, which is something that the Finns are not.
FW: You are playing a show with Björk on the 8th. What are your thoughts on her place in music history in terms of being an Icelandic musician? Do you feel that you "stand in her shadow" by being a female musician from Iceland?
OA: Not at all, I don't feel like my identity is that much about being icelandic. I just see myself as a artist trying to do my best in sharing my music with others. Björk is a fabioulus artist and I really look up to her, because she does things the way she wants to do them. That's very inspiring for me.
FW: What bands are currently exciting you? In Iceland and from other areas?
OA: I really like this young band from Iceland called
Retro Stefson.
FW: Finally, while this is a little political, how do you think the economic crisis in Iceland affects you as a musician? Do you think it makes you want to move your music into being political?
OA: I'm not interested in putting my energy to much into politics. It's not my job. The way the economic crisis is affecting me at the moment is that I feel a strong urge not to be smothered by it. I think it's very important under these circumstances that artist keep their mind clear and creative, to keep up the good spirit.

Interview with Björk in Grapevine Magazine (July 2009)

Just back home from a City Trip to Helsinki, the capital of Suomi Finland.
Tonight I found a brand new interview with Björk in the latest Reykjavik Grapevine issue by Haukur.
Read it yourself @ A Conversation With Björk

About her next record, and past records:
G: Is this something you will employ on your next album?
B: Can you smell it? Yes, I am excited about this. It’s more complicated than pouring water around, of course, but all these programs are very exciting and bring with them the promise of a thousands unexplored possibilities.
G: What are you thinking in terms of the next record? Not so much in how it sounds, but in terms of themes, underlying concepts, emotional spectrum and ideas. I’ve experienced each of your records as examining certain concepts or thoughts, Volta being all screaming physical revolt, then you had Vespertine with its frail undertones of courtship and introspection...
B: Well, Vespertine was... I made it around the time I bought my first laptop. It was very exciting. Everyone was so depressed, talking about ‘THE END OF MUSIC’ and ‘music is doomed, what with all the downloading’ and I was just... ‘No, it’s not. You just need some imagination.’ It was partly inspired by that. There was a collection of instruments on the record that all sound very good when they’re downloaded – like the harp, glockenspiel and celesta – and all the voices were whispered instead of sung at full blast.
The soundscape was kind of virtual, more thought than physical. More mental and frozen. I decided: ‘OK, this world is not warm summer, it is a frozen winter. It’s cold, you turn off your body.’ In Vespertine, I made a record that you experience in a frozen state, from the cover artwork to the soundscape and all lyrics being about being in a pupal stage on a winter’s night. Hibernating. I was playing with that idea. It’s funny to think that in the year 2000, when I was making that record, people were acting very scared about the purported ‘end of music’. It’s always that same cliché. I liked turning it upside down.
And now of course, almost ten years later, there’s a whole lot of music out there being made that’s directly influenced by what downloads well. Music being made by people that have been for the last decade listening to mp3 files at their house, and now they’re making music out of them. There’s no real focus now on listening to Dolby Stereo at your house. The bitrate can be shitty for that matter, there’s no right way to listen to music. Anyway, I thought that work with Vespertine was equally exciting and challenging. And then Volta was a very
different affair...
Up on the hill with a flag and a horn
G: So what are you thinking or contemplating right now that might be reflected on Volta’s follow-up?
B: My friend Gabríela [Friðriksdóttir, artist] is big on numerology. In the time leading up to Volta, she’d calculated that I was an eight, which means justice. I thought that was funny, especially since my dad is always working in the union movement and my mom has that gene in her... she went on hunger strike for eighteen days to try and stop the Kárahnjúkar dam from happening. So I thought it would be funny and humorous – although maybe no one but me gets the joke – to do a justice album, an EIGHT; up on the hill with a flag and a horn.
For the next record, if I can promise you anything about that, it’s that it will not be a justice record. It’s fun to run up the hill with a big flag, demanding justice, but it can be a tiring feeling in the long run. Trying to think you can tell others what’s right and what they need to do. It was fun for two years but now I am done with that. I liked it, though, the raw energy with the brass girls and the hooliganism. But now I have something different. I will say that I am excited about all the new programs and instruments we’ve been talking about.

Music Alliance Pact (MAP) # 10 (July 2009)

15th of the Month: MAP time!
This is the 10. Edition of the Music Alliance Pact, a collaboration of music blogs from all around the globe. This "I love Icelandic music" blog joined from the beginning in October 2008. Two new countries take part now: Japan & Venezuela.

You can download all songs @ once, go to the link @ the end of this post.

I've chosen the band Sudden Weather Change to be in the picture for Iceland this time. "Prey mode", a song of their Debut Album out on Kimi Records Label with the long title "Stop! Handgrenade In The Name Of Crib-Death 'nderstand".

ARGENTINA: Zonaindie
Mi PequeÒa Muerte La M˙sica Nueva
Mi PequeÒa Muerte means "my little death" so you're probably thinking this is not a particularly optimistic band. That was true for Hospital, their 2004 debut album, which was loaded with melancholic indie-rock tunes and moaning vocals. But this is 2009 and believe it or not, the band's third album is called Un Futuro Brillante ("a brilliant future"). Maybe that was just pure irony, but in this new effort they define themselves with shiny sounds and instruments, including horns and Moog synthesizers.

AUSTRALIA: Who The Bloody Hell Are They?
Boat Beam The Rain Pauly
So it turns out that Josephine of Sparkadia is now in this gorgeously gentle folky trio in Madrid called Boat Beam, and they seem to be kinda popular (check their MySpace). How crazy is that? I could listen to The Rain Pauly for days.

BRAZIL: Meio Desligado
Nancy Keep Cooler
Five-piece band Nancy have played just a few shows in Brazil and may be more well-known outside the country. They were the first Brazilian band on virtual label RCRD LBL and have been featured on BBC Radio's Introducing programme, showing their soft indie tunes. Nancy's members live in different cities and countries so the band's debut album, Chora Matisse!, was composed on the internet through emails and IM.

CANADA: I(Heart)Music
Rah Rah I've Got Faith
When I had to submit my ballot for the Polaris Music Prize (think a Canadian version of the Mercury Prize), the one album that was toughest for me to leave off was Rah Rah's amazing Going Steady. As I've Got Faith shows, the band combine the best elements of Broken Social Scene (with the constant sense they're just barely keeping everything together) and Arcade Fire (in its epicness), with the end result being a sound that's all their own.

CHILE: Super 45
Pedropiedra Sol Mayor
Pedro Subercaseaux has been involved with music for almost a decade. Having explored such diverse styles as cumbia, hip-hop, electronica, pop and rock, he has been part of several projects such as Hermanos Brothers, Tropiflaite, Yaia and CHC, gathering a good amount of success along the way. This year Subercaseaux has decided to release his debut solo album, under the moniker Pedropiedra, in which he demonstrates his great ability to craft catchy pop-oriented melodies.

DENMARK: All Scandinavian
The Works Live And Direct (featuring Jams F. Kennedy)
It's time to bring some urban tunes to all ye faithful readers of the Music Alliance Pact. Enter The Works aka producers Twelve Beats and Terry Tester, whom I stumbled across quite recently and whose intriguing fusion of hip-hop and electronica I haven't been able to shake off since. Minimalist, yet rich on details. Hardly moving, but always taking you places. Their debut release, Yokohama EP, is out now and streamed in full on their MySpace.

ENGLAND: The Daily Growl
Friendship The Graveyard Shift
Tired of indie bands showing off their 'African influences'? Well, get ready for one more, although this is done with a lot more bite, distortion and general sense of fun than most.

FINLAND: Glue
Neufvoin Robot
Neufvoin are an up-and-coming indie band who create beautifully-arranged catchy pop melodies with guitars, synthesizer textures and a few other instruments. Apparently, they also like playing with bots and droids. Robot is taken from their debut Robokop EP, six songs produced by Rubik frontman Artturi Taira that journey many different musical landscapes.

FRANCE: ZikNation
Jessica Fichot Un, Deux, Trois (1,2,3)
Born in America to a French father and Chinese mother, chanteuse and songwriter Jessica Fichot was raised in France in a multicultural environment. She is a lot like her hometown of Paris: French at heart, but with a soul that's truly international. Her multi-ethnic upbringing colors the songs on her debut album.

GERMANY: Blogpartei
Bonaparte Gigolo Vagabundo
Bonaparte are a Berlin-based artist collective from all across Europe. Their sparkling weird-folk is powered by Balkan pace and electronic rhythms. Outfitted with crazy costumes, they are one of the most exciting German live acts around.

ICELAND: I Love Icelandic Music
Sudden Weather Change Prey Mode
Sudden Weather Change are a five-piece rock band from Reykjavik who have been compared to Sonic Youth and Pavement. Prey Mode is taken from their debut album, Stop! Handgrenade In The Name Of Crib-Death 'nderstand, which came out in April on the Icelandic Kimi Records label and will be released in Europe and America in September.

IRELAND: Nialler9
The Holy Roman Army Elegy
Ireland has already produced its fair share of amazing records so far this year and we can now add The Holy Roman Army's album to that list. How The Light Gets In is the brother and sister duo's debut and it's filled with ambient and electronic flourishes with an organic heart. Perhaps it's not a surprise they are a doctor and a psychologist respectively. Elegy is a perfect example of the band's yearning for something emotional between the city's streets.

ITALY: Polaroid
Iori's Eyes Anchor
Iori's Eyes are a boy and a girl from Milan who play gentle pop with a dreamy touch. Their music brings together a folk mood and a post-rock background. Their songs sound as fragile and delicate as little toys, but definitely know how to be surprising and poignant. Iori's Eyes just released their debut EP, And Everything Fits In The Yellow Whale, and I can't wait to listen to a proper album.

JAPAN: JPOP Lover
LITE Ghost Dance
LITE are a Tokyo-based instrumental band who play experimental rock with striking, groove-heavy basslines. Formed in 2003, their spirit is similar to Mogwai, 65daysofstatic, Battles, Toe and Envy. In May, LITE visited America for the first time, going out on tour with legendary bass guitarist Mike Watt.

MEXICO: Club Fonograma
Hello Seahorse! Universo 2
Hello Seahorse! is the year's most acclaimed Mexican indie band. With their third album, Bestia, the trio have made the transition into a multi-dimensional group with a masterwork under their belt. Bestia shines in between ghosts and hazy sonic beauty, in a universe of its own, and proves Hello Seahorse! have total control over their romanticized and passionate, sublime creations.

NEW ZEALAND: Counting The Beat
Urbantramper Southern Hemisphere Blues
Urbantramper are a five-piece from Wellington who are part of a loose collective known as Treeninja. The band produce introspective pop songs that reflect an endearing, naive angst about their place in the world. This is a group with a manifesto! They're currently considering issues of music distribution, copyright and the impact of these on the nature of the relationship between musician and audience. Urbantramper have a strong back catalogue and a new album due in September.

NORWAY: Eardrums
Silverdrop Real Life
It's July, it's summer and it's time for some fresh and shiny indie-pop from Norwegian six-piece Silverdrop. These are definitely sounds for the sunny days and the band's new recordings are even more bouncy and energetic than the songs I've heard from them before. Silverdrop are currently working on their debut album.

PERU: SoTB
Francois Peglau Spring Lovers Song (Si T˙ Quieres)
Francois Peglau's songs do not need much explanation, they just happen. They are simple and beautiful - they could be borne from a whistle on a bus or a nice sunny day with friends. Francois moved to London two years ago and Spring Lovers Song (Si T˙ Quieres) is his most recent song.

PORTUGAL: Posso Ouvir Um Disco?
Andrew Thorn ME Jane
Andrew Thorn is Jo„o Pedro Coimbra, a Portuguese composer/musician/producer and founder of the extremely successful duo Mesa. Andrew Thorn is Jo„o's way of exploring his creativity beyond Mesa's sound. The debut EP, Brutes On The Quiet, was released independently (Mesa is signed to Sony/BMG) on July 13 and ME Jane is the first authorized download by the artist and a MAP exclusive.

ROMANIA: Babylon Noise
Melting Carousel Several Other Universes
Melting Carousel are an indie-pop band from Timisoara with an eclectic approach, ranging from alternative pop to jazz.

SCOTLAND: The Pop Cop
Maple Leaves Easy Speak
Even though Glasgow's pedigree of producing twee, folky-pop bands (Belle & Sebastian, Camera Obscura) is strong, few have been as relentlessly joyous as Maple Leaves. With their dreamy girl-boy vocals and penchant for colouring their songs with flute, piano and acoustic guitar, Maple Leaves are guaranteed to put the spring into anyone's summer.

SINGAPORE: I'm Waking Up To...
Force Vomit Liberator
Surfing and punk-rock in the city state of Singapore don't necessarily go hand in hand due to the lack of any noteworthy waves (both literally and metaphorically). Enter Force Vomit, the antithesis of Singapore's two shortcomings with their brazen brand of surf-punk that takes the piss out of Singapore's sanitized idiosyncrasies and semblance of normal life. Sounding like a Dick Dale number cut by switchblades, Liberator should easily find a place in a Tarantino film.

SOUTH KOREA: Indieful ROK
Dringe Augh Tutelar
Singer-songwriter Dringe Augh offers lovely songs full of lively guitar play. Over the years he has recorded several demos and his first official EP, Individually Wrapped, was released in June. On the new version of Tutelar, Dringe is accompanied by delightful female vocals from Eunjie Song of modern folk duo Sogyumo Acacia Band.

SWEDEN: Swedesplease
MAKTHAVERSKAN German Boy
I was stumbling around the net (MySpace in particular) and came across this band called MAKTHAVERSKAN. I have since learned they are signed to Luxury. Consider this your introduction to the new 'it' band from Gothenburg. They are agit-pop combined with post-punk and a little bit of Joan Jett tunefulness.

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA: I Guess I'm Floating
Spanish Prisoners Kiss The Lawn Goodbye
Brooklyn's Spanish Prisoners, fronted by Leo Maymind, create fractured power-pop in the vein of The New Porno's Dan Bejar (Destroyer). They're currently working on a new album but in the meantime they've released a free three-song EP - download it here - from which Kiss The Lawn Goodbye is taken.

VENEZUELA: Barquisimeto Musical
Gonzalo Teppa De Conde A Principal
Gonzalo Teppa is a musician, composer and a breathtaking double-bass player. Born in Barquisimeto, he has wowed audiences in Mexico, Brazil, Spain, USA, Colombia and Bolivia. Downbeat Magazine has selected him as solo artist of the year twice. De Conde A Principal is a version of an original work from Venezuelan composer Aldemaro Romero. It belongs to his latest work, ConTrabajos De Aldemaro.

Hey, I’m in love,
My fingers keep on clicking to the beating of my heart.
Hey, I can’t stop my feet,
Ebony and ivory and dancing in the street.
Hey, it’s because of you,
The world is in a crazy, hazy hue.
My heart is beating like a jungle drum. (x 3)
Man, you got me burning,
I’m the moment between the striking and the fire.
Hey, read my lips,
Cause all they say is kiss, kiss, kiss.
No, it’ll never stop,
My hands are in the air, yes I’m in love.
My heart is beating like a jungle drum. (x 8)

Amiina in the Spotlight @ IMX

amiina - A noble Quartet

Sólrún, María, Edda and Hildur - the four Icelandic women in their mid twenties collectively known as amiina first decided they wanted to write music together in 2004. They gathered together every last instrument they could find and piled them into their car. They then filled every available bit of space with food.
This, they maintain, was a very, very important part of the process. But it was also very nearly the act that prevented the birth of amiina. Their overloaded car was unable to struggle up the steep mountainous incline to the studio they had chosen, and had a local farmer not towed them to their destination with his tractor amiina might never have come to be.
"Kurr", the bands debut album, named after the sound that birds are said to make in Iceland makes it clear that they have not learnt their lesson from this experience. amiina are the kind of band about whom it could be said, almost literally, that they employ pretty much everything but the kitchen sink.
And though it's true that they started with individually defined roles as a string quartet this was never going to be how they would set about making a record of their own. In amiina there are no specific assignments: no official bass player, drummer, guitarist or singer.
Before becoming amiina, the girls had been a collaborative string quartet with Sigur Rós. They recently began collaborating with two new male musicians – Kippi Kaninus and Magnús Trygvason Eliassen - and have worked with them to create the brand new "Re Minore" EP, some of which can be heard on their MySpace.
How did you girls get together in the first place - and what was the main motivation for forming?
We met in music college and started out as a classical string quartet. After working with Sigur Rós and other bands we found out how fun it is to create your own music so we wanted to try to make something together from scratch.

What have amiina been doing since the last album?
We toured a bit, we've been doing various fun projects and then we have also been making some new music, both as amiina and in collaboration with others. And of course living our lives too.

Has the line up changed or does it remain the same?
amiina is still us four girls, but we have been touring with a fantastic drummer, Magnús Trygvason Eliassen, and now we are doing a collaboration with him and an electronic musician called Kippi Kanínus. The six of us have been making music and touring together. We just released a limited edition EP called "Re Minore", and hope to record a full-length album together in the near future.
The last album got major kudos - was that entirely unexpected or did you know you had something special?
Well...we didn't really know what to expect, but we had been touring a lot and knew that some people had been waiting for an amiina album for a while, so we were hoping that they would like it. It's hard to judge your own music, but as long as we are proud of what we make, we're happy.
When you set about writing the first album, how did you set about finding a direction or sound?
We didn't know where the music would take us. We didn't have a direction in mind. We just wanted to make an interesting world of sounds. Sometimes we have tried to push things in a decided direction but it never comes out that way. The music and our four different personal inputs take things in their own direction.
You toured a fair bit afterwards - what were the highlights?
To have the opportunity to play our music to loads of great people, getting feedback and feeling like it does make a difference to someone else than ourselves is great!
Amiina - The full pictureYou've also been busy collaborating haven't you?
Yes, we are working with great people all the time. Right now we are doing a really fun collaboration with Kippi and Maggi, who are two very cool musicians. Kippi does electronics and Maggi is a drummer. We've been making new music together and plan on making loads more. Earlier this year we did a collaboration show with Shlomo (beatboxer) and Valgeir Sigurdsson at the Queen Elisabeth Hall in London. Last summer we toured with Sigur Rós to promote their album "Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust". And last week we collaborated on a couple of songs in a concert with a Japanese artist called Shugo, a very talented guy, to name a few.

Icelandic Music Through Unconventional Means from Gemma Riggs on Vimeo.

What kind of music do you all dig collectively as a ‘band’?
The four of us don't really have the same tastes in music, or the same favourite artists. We don't listen to much music together or talk about music a lot. We spend more time talking about food and other stuff.
What are your biggest musical differences as individuals?
We all come from the same background, we all studied violins and cellos in college. There is probably not a huge difference between us, maybe some of us are better at chords than others.
You're releasing a new EP - what can you tell us about it?
The new EP is called "Re Minore" and is a collaboration between amiina, Kippi and Maggi. It's a taste of what is coming. We have been working a lot with them lately, the music we are making together is less soft and more rhythmic than what we have been doing before.
Is there work afoot on a new album?

We have some new amiina songs that we haven't recorded yet. Not sure when that will happen, hopefully soon. But now we are focusing on composing and recording a new album with Kippi and Maggi.
What other plans for 2009 do you have?
The main project is the collaboration with Kippi and Maggi, but we are also doing a small tour around Iceland just the four of us this summer. We want to play in lighthouses and beautiful spaces around the country. Then we will just have to see what happens in the fall.
What have been the career highlights for amiina to date?
Getting the opportunity to play our music for thousands and thousands of people supporting Sigur Rós was pretty cool! We played in the Hollywood Bowl and some other great places, that's definitely one of the highlights. Also getting to collaborate with Lee Hazlewood before he passed away was incredible.
